Teens face world of work once more
Posted: 26th November 2019Year 11 students at BMAT STEM Academy undertook a week of work experience earlier this year to get a taste of the working world.
In December, they will once again take on work experience placements – along with Year 10 - to either try something new or to further explore their chosen professions.
Assistant headteacher Dave Ramsey said: “The first bout of work experience was so successful that we have decided to put on another week in the run-up to Christmas. The reason for that is to give Year 11 another opportunity to get a taste of the world of work.
“This time, students have been encouraged to organise their placements themselves to further develop their life skills. We have said to them if they loved their first round of work experience, do more of the same, but if they found it was not for them, this is an opportunity to try something different.”
While some students are working with the school’s sponsors – GlaxoSmithKline, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Raytheon, Gratnells and Pearson – others are taking up placements with Morgan Sindall to work on the Edinburgh Way scheme, in the aerospace industry and with Airbus and Harlow Group.
Mr Ramsey said: “This all goes back to our ethos of work-related learning and continuing to build those links with sponsors and employers. We hope they will continue those relationships when they move into our sixth form and do more one to one work with employers.
“When Year 11 return in January after their work experience and Christmas break, they will be ready to refocus on their impending exams.”
There will be another opportunity in the summer for both year groups to undertake more work experience.
